2008 - The International Year of Sanitation

Rich or poor, young or old, everybody does it.... But going to the toilet takes on a very different dimension for some of the world's poorest people. Around the world, 2.6 billion people do not have a clean and safe place to use for performing their bodily functions - they lack that basic necessity, a toilet. This hidden global scandal is the cause of millions of preventable deaths every year. Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of poor sanitation. That's 1.5 million preventable deaths every year.
